Marking a significant achievement in wildlife conservation efforts, ten juvenile northern river terrapins were released into the wild by forest officials in the Sunderbans in West Bengal.

The Northern Terrapin turtle or Batagur baska is one of the most endangered turtle species in the world. And although they were once plentiful in the mangrove forests, rivers and estuaries of Odisha and West Bengal, over fishing has led to a sharp decline in their population. They have since been categorized as critically endangered on IUCN Red List.
