Indian American police officer died in the hospital days after a head-on collision on Highway 99.

For the last two and a half years, the Indian American officer had worked for the Galt Police Department in Pennsylvania. Officer Kallirai described him as "actually an inspiration" and said he was someone who inspired her to join the police force.

Galt police officer Harminder Grewal died of his injuries in a car collision on his route to the Caldor Fire Station while responding to the Caldor Fire in Sacramento County, he was one of two officers injured in a head-on collision. The other Galt officer, according to officials, was still in the hospital but expected to recover. On the evening of Sept. 2, a memorial service will be held in the Capitol Building in Sacramento.

The Sacramento CHP got a call of a two-vehicle head-on accident on northbound Highway 99 around 4:35 a.m. that morning. Officers concluded that a Dodge Ram pickup truck was driving at an unknown speed on southbound Highway 99 when it collided with the center median, based on preliminary information collected at the scene. The Dodge entered the northbound lanes after breaking through the concrete barrier in the center median, colliding head-on with Grewal and Herrera's police car.
