Dr. Alka Mittal became the first woman to lead India's largest exploration and production company, oil and natural gas company (ONGC), on Jan. 3, when she was appointed as Chairperson and Managing Director (CMD).

Her appointment as CMD also makes her the country's second woman to lead an oil company, following Nishi Vasudev, who served as CMD of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited between 2014 and 2016.
