With temperatures touching 45 degrees in the northern states, there has been a sharp increase in the electricity demand. According to official figures the demand in April 2022 rose by 12.1 percent as compared to the same time last year.

As the Indian subcontinent is facing the brunt of the hottest summer in years, several states are witnessing hours long power outages that are adding fuel to the fire making the heat unbearable for many Indians.

In a recent meeting with heads of State, Prime Minister Modi commented on the heatwave that has gripped the nation. "Temperatures are rising rapidly in the country, and rising much earlier than usual," he said warning the Chief Ministers’ of fire accidents and urging them to take necessary precaution.
