COVID-19 may upset the plan to host Central Asian leaders on Republic Day

Due to the Covid-19 crisis in the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson could not visit India for Republic Day in 2021. However, the Republic Day celebration was held, and approximately 25,000 people were permitted to attend.

The Indian government is unlikely to go ahead with its plan to invite the heads of the five Central Asian countries to this year's Republic Day ceremony because of an increase in COVID-19 infections.

Instead, on Jan. 24 or 27, it has proposed hosting a virtual summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.
