The Elgar Parishad (conference) was an event first organized on December 31, 2017, on the bicentennial anniversary of the battle of Bhima-Koregaon (a small place in the vicinity of Pune city in the Indian state of Maharashtra).
This battle was won by the colonial British forces, becoming an important milestone in the third Anglo-Maratha war. The British had deployed Mahar Regiment, believed to be composed of Dalit soldiers, in the battle that played a crucial role in defeating Maratha forces.
The Indian Leftists, however, quickly jumped in to misrepresent the caste angle. They gave it a spin, calling it a victory of the oppressed Dalits over 'tyrannical Brahmins'; which is certainly not the case.
