Facebook sued by Rohingya refugees for its alleged role in the violence.

Facebook's algorithms amplify anti-Rohingya hate speech and the company did not spend enough money to hire moderators and fact-checkers who spoke the local languages and were familiar with the political situation, says the lawsuit.

Rohingya refugees have sued Facebook parent Meta Platforms for more than US$150 billion, claiming that the company failed to stop hateful posts inciting violence against the Muslim ethnic group by Myanmar's military rulers and supporters.

Lawyers filed a class-action lawsuit in California on Dec. 6 alleging that Facebook's presence in Myanmar aided in the spread of hate speech, misinformation, and incitement to violence, which "amounted to a substantial cause, and eventual perpetuation of, the Rohingya genocide."
