There is a scandalous tendency among some rulers that when their countries are literally on a precipitous fall they continue to talk politics or pretend that nothing calamitous is taking place. In the context of Asia, the most glaring example of this can be found in Afghanistan where the Taliban leadership seems quite unmindful of the fact that much of the country is under the grip of starvation and it continues to talk of the urgent need for international recognition and assistance but on its own terms.

In a recent meeting of clerics the Supreme Leader Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada, has warned foreigners not to interfere in internal affairs telling a massive all male conference of religious persons that Afghanistan “cannot develop without being independent”. The Supreme Leader, who is rarely seen in public is said to have been all praise for the Taliban takeover of August 2021 stressing that “The success of the Afghan jihad is not only a source of pride for Afghans but also for Muslims all over the world”.
