To commemorate India's 75th Independence anniversary, the Consulate General of India in Toronto (CGI Toronto) has chosen to award Varishta Yoddha' Awards to senior veterans over the age of 75. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is home to around 5,000 veterans from Indian defence forces.

The Consulate reached out to the Veterans' Association of Ontario, an organization founded in 1996 by veterans of Indian origin living in Ontario, for information on senior veterans in the GTA.
