Humanity one miscalculation away from nuclear war warns UN Chief

Currently over 13,000 nuclear weapons are now being held in arsenals around the world, Guterres added.

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that in the current scenario of rising geopolitical turmoil, when nations are stockpiling nuclear weapons, humanity is facing the threat of nuclear danger not seen since the height of the Cold War.

Speaking at the Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, Guterres said, “States are seeking false security in stockpiling and spending hundreds of billions of dollars on doomsday weapons that have no place on our planet,” adding that they have forgotten the lessons learnt from the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
