India is constructing a key tunnel project in Kashmir. Hundreds of workers are on this significant project to drill tunnels and build bridges to connect the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. Ladakh, which has de facto borders with Pakistan and China, currently relies on air supplies for about six months of the year.
According to officials, the first of four tunnels of 6.5-kilometers is now complete and will make Sonmarg accessible during the winter months for the first time. Sonmarg represents the end of the conifer-clad mountains before Ladakh begins across the steep Zojila mountain pass.
