UP, Bihar and Rajasthan have shown immense improvement, helping India remain in the course of steady improvement. The decrease in the ratio in these three states from 2016-18 is by 30, 19 and 23 points respectively, though from very high levels.

India’s maternal mortality ratio (MMR) has improved to 103 for the period 2017-19, which indicates that the country is all set to achieve the sustainable development goal of bringing it’s MMR to 70 well before the target year of 2030.

MMR, a key health system indicator, is the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births during a given period. India’s MMR was about 556 in 1990, 254 in 2004-06 and it was 122 in 2015-17.
