India has prohibited the import of drones with immediate effect, except for research and development, defense and security. According to the Civil Aviation Ministry, This decision is intended to encourage locally produced drones. Importing drone components, on the other hand, will not necessitate any permits.

90% of drones in India were imported until recently. Majority of significant components are imported, primarily from China. It had approved a three-year, INR1.2 billion production-linked incentive scheme for drones and their components.
