The Spelling Bee includes elementary and middle school students spelling words that most adults would struggle with. The National Spelling Bee first took place in 1925.

Harini Logan, a 14-year-old Indian American eighth-grader from Texas, won the renowned 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee, defeating Vikram Raju in a marathon, first-of-its-kind spell-off in which candidates were assessed on how many words they could correctly spell in 90 seconds.

Logan, who won the US$ 50,000 cash prize and the Scripps Cup trophy, as well as prizes from Merriam-Webster and Encyclopaedia Britannica, correctly spelled 21 out of 26 words, while Raju, a 12-year-old boy from Denver, successfully spelled 15 out of 19 words.
