Lakshmi, who lives in Michigan and has been in the US for two decades, has had an unusual experience. She was on an H-4 visa for spouses of highly skilled H-1B workers and had been waiting for her H-4 approval for nine months.

During this time, she lost her job, turned down a job offer, and wrote to senators, local politicians, and USCIS requesting expedited her case. She even spent tens of thousands of dollars consulting with immigration attorneys. But when Lakshmi finally received her H-4 approval, it didn't mean much to her because the H-4 approval was only valid for three days!
