On Feb. 21, the world celebrates International Mother Language Day. The United Nations-designated day acknowledges the importance of languages and multilingualism in advancing inclusiveness, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals' focus on leaving no one behind.

It was the initiative of Bangladesh to set up the International Mother Language Day, which was approved at the 1999 UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) General Conference and has been commemorated annually since. In the year 2000, the world celebrated the inaugural International Mother Language Day.
