Mahmud Jamal – first PIO to enter Canadian Supreme Court

Indian-origin Mahmud Jamal’s nomination as Canada’s top court judge comes in the aftermath of an attack on a Muslim family of four in Ontario

In a court that has had only white justices in its 146 year-long history, Mahmud Jamal has become the first person of Indian origin to enter the Supreme Court of Canada.

Born in Nairobi, Kenya to Ismaili Muslim parents hailing from India who immigrated to England in 1969 in search of a better life, Jamal moved to Edmonton in 1981.
