A new commercial airport is planned to be built roughly 80 kilometres from Ahmedabad's present airport. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the proposal for the construction of phase I of the proposed greenfield airport in Dholera, Gujarat, at a price of approximately US$ 13.05 billion.

The project is said to take four years to complete. Dholera International Airport Company Limited (DIACL) will carry out the project, which is a joint venture between the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Government of Gujarat (GoG), and the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT).
