Cartoonist and Padma Shri awardee Narayan Debnath passes away

Cartoonist Narayan Debnath passed away on Jan. 18 at 10.15 am at a private hospital in Kolkata. The 97 year old was admitted to the hospital on Dec. 24, where he was undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness.

Debnath was the creator of the popular Bengali comic strips of Handa Bhonda (1962), Bantul the Great (1965), Nonte Phonte (1969), and Bahadur Beral (1982). He holds the record of longest-running comics by an individual artiste for the Handa Bhonda comics series, which completed its continuous 53 years of running.
