The 84-year-old activist died in custody after several of his bail pleas on medical grounds were rejected.

On the occasion of the first death anniversary of the late human rights activist, Stan Swamy, a resolution demanding an “independent investigation” into his death was introduced in the United States Congress.

“Honoring the life and legacy of Father Stan, a prominent human rights activist who died while in custody of the Indian state on July 5, 2021, and encouraging India to pursue an independent investigation into his arrest, incarceration, and death,” the resolution reads.
