Rishi Sunak hits threshold for UK PM race; Priti Patel rules out bid

Former UK chancellor Rishi Sunak became one of the early contenders to receive the required support of 20 members of Parliament from the Conservative Party for his nomination to run for the position of the next British Prime Minister, which will be announced on September 5,2022.

Since the nominations for the election officially started, the 42-year-old British Indian member of parliament for Richmond in Yorkshire has kept a commanding lead in the race to succeed Boris Johnson. Priti Patel, who was widely anticipated to enter the race as another person of Indian ancestry, decided against running, saying that while she was "grateful" for the support, her main priority is now her position as Home Secretary.
