Demand for Indian spices has increased in Australia.

Dr. Surya Bhattarai, a crop physiologist at Central Queensland University (CQU), is currently leading research into the agronomic systems needed for farmers to adopt five high-value spice crops prevalent in our kitchens.

Dr. Bhattarai's team is researching black sesame (kaala til), fennel (saunf), nigella seeds (kalonji), caraway (shahi jeera), and cumin at the university's Institute for Future Farming Systems in Rockhampton (jeera).
