Sri Lankan Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda said that the two new projects would bring a considerable number of pilgrims from South India for temple tourism in northern Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan cabinet has approved of two long pending connectivity proposals - flights from Jaffna to Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu, and a ferry service from Kankesanthurai in Jaffna to Karaikal in Puducherry.

India’s wish list had always included these connectivity projects, to develop the people to people linkages between the countries which will in turn contribute to economic activity in Sri Lanka’s Tamil north.  The tourist traffic from South India could contribute greatly in foreign exchange to Sri Lanka’s cash-strapped economy.
