Terror and horror unfolds in Afghanistan … Act one, scene one

New Delhi has to be anxious: given the Taliban’s nexus with Pakistan there is every reason to believe that Islamabad would use Afghanistan as a conduit to smuggle hard core terrorists into India.

The world is witness to a pathetic sequence of events in Afghanistan and only the naive and the foolhardy would have believed that it was not going to happen. And the disingenuous in the comity of nations are welcoming the new scheme of things pretending that at long last the poor souls of that hapless country have got something called stability. In fact it is reported that Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Imran Khan has welcomed the end of “slavery” (from Americans) forgetting for a minute that he is close to driving his own country into a vassal state, if not already.

The image from Sunday shows roughly 640 Afghans who had been cleared to evacuate crammed inside the C-17 Globemaster II cargo jet — far more than the aircraft’s designated load of passenger “The crew made the decision to go,” a defence official told military news site Defense One, which obtained the image. “Approximately 640 Afghan civilians disembarked the aircraft when it arrived at its destination.” Photo courtesy of US Defense Department via Defense One)

History, they say, is a lesson for the future to be learnt. But this does not seem to hold good for the United States that seemed to have learnt nothing from its past burnt fingers in Vietnam and more recently in Iraq. Winning hearts and minds is not about throwing billions of tax payers money into uselessly pursuing an elusive goal and that too in the final stages of the meltdown. It is not about sharing candy bars with little children; it is all about understanding where Afghanistan, its leaders, tribal warlords and people come from. Now it is all down to President Joseph Biden to be tagged with the label as the person who “lost” Afghanistan forgetting for a minute that America never “had” Afghanistan to start with to “lose” it!
