First Solar, an U.S. based solar technology company intends to invest $648,000,000 in a new, fully vertically integrated photovoltaic (PV) thin film solar module manufacturing facility in India. The facility is expected to be built in Tamil Nadu and operations are planned to commence in the second half of 2023. This is however dependent on the pending approval of Indian Government incentives.

The proposed facility plans to have a nameplate capacity of 3.3 gigawatts (GW) DC. First Solar is the only US-headquartered company among Top 10 largest solar manufacturers in the world that does not use a crystalline silicon (c-Si) semiconductor. It produces its thin film PV modules using a fully integrated, continuous process under one roof and does not rely on Chinese c-Si supply chains. The facility is expected to create over 1000 jobs in Tamil Nadu.
