Union cabinet approves India’s enhanced climate goals

The updated version of the NDC now states that India will now reduce its emission intensity by at least 45 per cent, in comparison to the previous goal of 33 to 35 per cent.

Two of the five pledges made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the global climate meet that was held in Glasgow last year have been approved by the union cabinet. This means that they have been added to the nation’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement.

The NDC is a formal statement which outlines to the United Nations the plans and pledges that a country makes in order to meet the goal of maintaining global temperature increases to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
