75 lakh citizens to perform Surya Namaskar globally on Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti, the most pious festival, is devoted to Surya, the Hindu sacred sun deity. People take a holy plunge in rivers on this day and pray to the sun for success and prosperity.

According to the Ayush Ministry around 75 lakh, people will perform Surya Namaskar around the world on Makar Sankranti to mark the auspicious occasion.

Makar Sankranti is regarded as the most pious festival and is dedicated to the Hindu religious sun god Surya. On this day people take a holy dip in rivers and pray to the sun for their success and prosperity. A different name knows it in different states, Pedda Pandunga in Andhra Pradesh, Magh Bihu in Assam, Pongal in Tamil Nadu and Megh Mala in parts of Central and North India.
