Gandhi would be the first Indian to receive the Congressional Gold Medal, which has previously been awarded to George Washington, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, and Rosa Parks, among others.

Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, New York, introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives to posthumously award Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal in honor in recognition of his contributions to the Nation by the promotion of nonviolence.

The resolution states that the speaker of the house of representatives and the president pro tempore of the Senate shall make appropriate arrangements for the presentation of a gold medal of appropriate design on behalf of Congress, to Mahatma Gandhi.
