Donald Lu, to be the Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs, on 28, July 2021. He will be succeeding ALice Wells who retired last year. Mr. Lu was the U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic and also Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi.

Addressing the members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during his confirmation hearing Lu said, "As two great Indo-Pacific powers, we must strive to ensure that our Asian partners remain sovereignand free, and not dominated by a single power. As two great democracies, weshould demonstrate through our example why democracy promotes peace,stability, and personal freedoms. And as two great free-market economies, we canbuild a more stable and inclusive global economy."
