Vanita Gupta is the first Indian-American who has become the associate attorney general in the US. It is the third-highest rank at the Department of Justice. Formerly, she was a civil rights lawyer.
President Joe Biden nominated her for office on January 7, 2021. The US Senate voted 51-49 which thereby resulted in the appointment of Vanita Gupta as the associate attorney general on April 21, 2021. Joe Biden congratulated Vanita Gupta "on making history as the first woman of color to serve as associate attorney general.”
